Songs of Ascent (part 1)

This Sunday, we begin a two part series, Songs of Ascent. The Songs of Ascent are a series of 15 psalms (Psalms 120-134). The reason for this collection and arrangement is not precisely stated in the Bible; however, many different explanations have been given for these “degrees” or “steps” or “ascents.” Most theologians propose that these were songs for God’s people on their pilgrim journey to the temple in Jerusalem for the three yearly feasts (Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles). Regardless of their exact purpose and use in the past these songs serve as powerful examples of how we can express our worship and love for God.
